About the Role:

You will be working with a team of professionals in our Community Access program to support a variety of individuals with disabilities, some of who may have complex behaviors and needs. This team is fast paced and there will be a need to adapt to changing plans and an ability to adjust to situations as they arise. You can also expect most days to be attending, participating, or engaging in different activities with the individuals you support. You will often be in the community, spending a lot of time outdoors and driving to meet individuals, or picking them up or dropping them off may take you throughout the city. You will be working to support the clients life skills and following their goals.

Individuals you support may have developmental delays, and or diagnoses such as Anxiety, Mental Health Concerns, Addictions, Lifts and Transfers, Personal Care, Non-Verbal, Autism, Down Syndrome, Harm Reduction and FASD.


You will follow the individualized support plans for
each individual to facilitate learning and personal growth. The individuals you work with may display verbal aggression, require some level of personal care, require support with lifts, wheelchairs, or mobility assistance, and will require you to drive and accompany them to activities or medical appointments.

 
Daily responsibilities may and will include any of the following and will vary depending on the individual being supported each day... 

  • Provide medical, environmental, physical, and behavioural supports using various tools, techniques, and trainings including redirection, and verbal prompting
  • Drive to meet individuals, or transport them to activities/appointments
  • Assist in daily responsibilities such as grocery shopping, attending work, volunteer activities, meal planning, cooking, cleaning, completing course work, budgeting, laundry, etc.
  • Assisting individuals who use mobility devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, lifts, etc.
  • Participate in the research, development, and implementation of Individuals' programs
  • Learn and use the behavioural support plans to better understand individual needs and requirements
  • Effectively complete required client documentation

Schedule:  


This is a permanent 12 hours/week position. The schedule will be Monday and Wednesday 9am-12:00pm and Friday 9:00am-3:00pm, but may require some flexibility between 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM.

 

Benefits:  

  • The starting rate for this position is $21.19/hour 
  • Mileage is reimbursed at $0.50/km   
  • Cost shared benefits will begin after 3 months’ probation 
  • This role includes 4% vacation pay plus an additional 5 flex days per year after the first 3 months of employment 
  • All regular staff are eligible to pick up additional casual hours at any of our locations outside of their scheduled hours 
  • Trainings provided include: APRP, CPI, PBS, Med Admin, Water Safety, Food Safety Basics, Infection Prevention & Control, and more

Minimum Requirements:  
  • A Certificate/Diploma in the Human Services or Disability sector (equivalencies will be considered) 
  • Intermediate computer skills
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and minimum $2,000,000 liability insurance by time of hire
  • Must be comfortable supporting individuals in a swimming pool
  • Must be comfortable supporting individuals around animals/pets
  • Comfortable supporting individuals with diverse disabilities and complex diagnoses

Preferred Requirements:  

  • One-year relevant experience in the human services field or disability sector
  • Previous training or experience with lifts, transfers, or g-tubes
  • Experience working with families, community resources and building rapport with stakeholders
  • Having experience supporting individuals with mental health illnesses, ASD, or additions would be an asset
  • Current trainings including First Aid/CPR, Medication Administration, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Abuse Prevention Response Protocol, Positive Behaviour Supports, etc.
