Role Expectations & Summary:

This is a 34 hour/week position at our "Hawkmount" Group Home location in Hawkmount Heights, NW Calgary. In this role you will be working with a team to provide support in daily living to the individuals who live in the home. The individuals in this home have diagnoses including dementia, severe developmental disabilities, brain injury, blindness, and deafness. All the individuals in this home are wheelchair bound and need varying levels of mobility aid. Each individual has a developed behavioural support plan that identifies not only the physical needs of the individual, but also their interests, and their personal goals. Your responsibilities will include providing support with hygienic routines, personal and ostomy care, medication administration, house duties, meal preparation, accompanying individuals to social outings, activities, and appointments. Daily tasks will include using lifts, mobility assists, and G-tubes - trainings are provided in all of these areas. Individuals may display physical behaviors of concern, and trainings will be provided in how to properly address and respond to these incidents. Driving is a requirement for this position, and could include driving throughout all quadrants of the city. This position will require supporting individuals in public pools, and could include environments where domestic pets are present.

About You:

You are compassionate, attentive, and passionate about supporting people with disabilities. You are a team player who communicates well, and takes ownership for your responsibilities. You are comfortable with providing full personal and ostomy care, participating in social and recreational activities, and advocating for individuals when needed. You have previous experience with G-tube feeding and lifting/ assisting individuals with a wheelchair. You are professional, take ownership, and are committed to following the agency's policies and procedures. You take the time to understand and know the individuals you support, and always and act/respond in their best interest while maintaining professional boundaries. 

Schedule & Benefits: 

This permanent position is 36 hours/week at Hawkmount group home, which is located in the Northwest (NW) area of Calgary. The schedule will be from Saturday 3pm-11pm, Sunday 9am-9pm, Monday 3pm-11pm and Tuesday 3pm-9pm but may require some flexibility at times. The starting pay rate for this position will be $21.19. There is an additional differential of $0.25 - $0.50/hr for evening and weekend shifts. Cost shared benefits begin after 3-months. Vacation pay is 4%, and you receive 5 flex days per year beginning after 3 months. 

Trainings Provided include: 

Positive Behaviour Supports, Abuse Prevention and Response Protocol, Medication Administration, Food Safety, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Infection Prevention & Control, Water Safety Training, and others. (The only training you are required to obtain outside of work hours at your own cost is First Aid & CPR within the first 3 months of employment).

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Diploma/Certification from a Canadian Institution in the Human Services sector or Disability Sector (equivalencies will be considered)
  • One-two years of relevant experience
  • Must provide a valid class 5 driver's license, have a reliable vehicle, and be willing to have a minimum $2,000,000 liability insurance by the time of hire
  • Intermediate in computer skills and administration skills
  • Provide medical, technological, environmental, physical, and behavioural support

Preferred Requirements: 

  • Nursing experience or knowledge of Brain Injuries & Severe Developmental Disabilities would be an asset
  • Previously trained and have knowledge of medication administration 
  • Have taken relevant trainings such as First Aid & CPR, Non-violent Crisis Intervention, Abuse Prevention Response Protocol, and Positive Behavior Supports, etc.
  • Previous experience in a group home setting would be an asset
